Align Probiotic Supplemnent

Align is one of the top selling brands of P&G (Procter and Gamble), an American multinational consumer good company. The company proclaims that its focus is to make peoples’ lives a little easier. Align daily probiotic supplement is the tangible product that goes under the brand name align.

Ingredients

The main ingredient of this probiotic supplement is the strain B. infantis (Bifidobacterium infantis 35624) which is marketed as BifantisTM. According to the manufacturer, align contains 1 billion live bacteria/CFU when manufactured, and provides an effective level of bacteria 7 billion until at least the “best by” date. It turns out that it is B. infantis that makes this probiotic product unique.

Binfantis and Benefits

Bifidobacterium infantis is a rod-shaped anaerobic (thrive without oxygen) bacterium found in the human gastrointestinal tract. It is one of the 32 known species that belong to the genus Bifidobacterium.

Infantis breaks down sugars into lactic acid in the human intestines. One salient characteristic of this microorganism is its ability to use some “indigestible” plant compounds, including some proteins and cellulose, for fuel.

Its ability to utilize numerous different compounds as food allows it to survive in the digestive tract and compete with potentially harmful bacteria for space and resources in the gut.

While this strain is mostly associated with infants, it is still useful for adults. Basing on studies, Bifidobacterium Infantis has shown promising results especially when used as a medication for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms such as cramping, bloating, abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea (in infants and children as well traveller’s diarrhea in adults) and constipation. According to British researchers, women who took B. infantis for four weeks showed improvement in their IBS symptoms.

A study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found B. infantis supports stomach health and digestion.  It also guards your immune system against bad bacterial growth in the intestines. As if that is not enough, some strains have been said to produce B vitamins.

According to WemMD;

Infantis has been used to restore “good bacteria” in the gut that have been killed or removed by diarrhea, radiation, chemotherapy, antibiotics, or other causes.

It also used to treat a bowel disease called ulcerative colitis, as well as a condition called pouchitis, which sometimes develops after surgery for ulcerative colitis.

Some people use Bifidobacteria to prevent a particular bowel infection called necrotizing enterocolitis in newborns.

Other uses for Bifidobacteria include treating a skin condition in infants called atopic eczema, cold, yeast infections (candidiasis), flu, breast pain (mastitis), reducing flu-like symptoms in children attending day-care centers, hepatitis, cancer, lactose intolerance, Lyme disease, mumps in addition to lowering cholesterol.

Does align probiotic really work as medicine for stomach and digestive problems or as well as medication for IBS?

Align is known to be the best Probiotic with bifidobacterium infantis. According to a 2014 survey by Symphony Health Solutions, it is the number one gastroenterologist and doctor recommended probiotic. As discussed above, based on studies, it has shown good results which means it works. You will also find out more from user reviews and ratings shortly.

Other than Bifidobacterium infantis 35624, align probiotic is also made up of the following ingredients, Microcrystalline cellulose, sucrose, hypromellose, titanium dioxide (color), sodium caseinate(milk protein), propyl gallate (antioxidant preservative), magnesium stearate, trisodium citrate dehydrate, gellan gum in addition to milk.

Basing on how it is made and the ingredients, it is not meant for weight loss. Not even the labeling states that it is meant to help you lose weight. One very popular critical review  on the internet  says that align is so mis-aligned… This review originally appeared on Amazon under a product called Align Digestive Health Probiotic Supplement 28 count.  According to this review, the product does not sit well with people with impaired digestion and sensitive gut because it has potentially dangerous fillers and additives which lower its positive effects. So, what are these additives and fillers? Here is a portion of the review with the details on the additional substances.

“ 1) Sugar
This is public enemy #1. Sugar suppresses the immune system and can cause gas and bloating in people with chronic yeast infections, IBS/IBD and Celiac disease. Marketing a `breakthrough’ probiotic containing sugar is backwards logic!
2) Magnesium Stearate
I learned during my visits to few supplement manufacturing facilities that magnesium stearate is used as a lubricating agent for equipment used in manufacturing capsules and other dietary supplements. Magnesium stearate ensures supplement production at a faster rate, and prevents the ingredients in capsules sticking to various parts of the machines used in manufacturing. Can supplement be manufactured without magnesium stearate? The answer is YES. But it will take longer time to manufacture the same product thereby making it more expensive. In addition, individuals with sensitive digestive system might have a problem with absorption of supplements containing magnesium stearate.
Czap, AL. Townsend Letter For Doctors and Patients, July 1999, Vol.192;Pg. 117-119.
3) Titanium Dioxide
Over the years I have consumed a lot of nutritional supplements; therefore, after reading numerous nutritional labels I have realized that titanium dioxide powder is a popular ingredient used in supplement manufacturing. So, I wondered: ” What is Titanium Dioxide? Am I eating a metal”? According to European Commission Environment “titanium dioxide pigment is a white powder with high opacity and brilliant whiteness. These properties have made it a valuable pigment for a broad range of applications in paints, plastic good, inks and paper. Titanium dioxide is also used in many white products including food, cosmetics, UV skin protection”. So, vitamin manufacturing companies use this titanium dioxide powder to make our supplements to look white and pretty. There is no added health benefit for ingesting titanium dioxide except if you want to admire your supplement pill on your dinner plate. Furthermore, titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen “possibly carcinogen to humans” when inhaled. I think, we can do just fine without eating titanium dioxide.
4) Propyl Gallate
This is a preservative used to prevent fats and oils from spoiling. It has been classified as a “xenoestrogen” — a substance with estrogen-like effects that is stirring international health concerns. “Xenoestrogens have been linked to a range of human health effects, including reduced sperm counts in men and increased risk of breast cancer in women”.
5) Artificial Color FD&C Blue #1
FD &C Blue #1 is so toxic that FDA (Food and Drug Administration) have issued a warning to healthcare professionals about its toxicity including death in patients receiving enteral feeding (introduction of liquid food through a tube inserted into intestine.
Why would P&G add such a toxic coloring to its probiotic remains a mystery to me.”

However, the user acknowledges the power of Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 …. that it has showed significant improvement in the composite score for abdominal pain/discomfort, bloating/distention, and/or bowel movement difficulty.

Align Probiotics Side Effects-Diarrhea, Rash, Nausea, Bloating & Gas

What are the side effects of align probiotics? Does it cause diarrhea, rash, nausea, bloating or gas?

Align probiotic has mild or no side effects. Clinical studies showed no major disparity in side effects between align and placebo (for example sugar pill).

Why does align probiotic hardly cause side effects?

As Livestrong puts it, is because it is already familiar to your body to some extent. Bifidobacteria constitutes 95% of the bacteria in your gut a few days after your birth. The percentage drops as you grow older. By the time you have reached adulthood, it estimated that the levels of this bacteria may be as low as 3 percent.

However, as low as it may appear, this percentage is enough for the purpose of creating rapport with your body. Hence, your body doesn’t see Bifantis as a stranger, more as an old but unfamiliar acquaintance. Provided you take the supplement as directed, your body will eventually get used to high levels of Bifidobacteria again.

Side effects, if they occur, tend to be mild and digestive in nature, that is gas and bloating. Probiotics, from an overall view, have temporary side effects such as rashes and diarrhea, which in fact are signs that these supplements are working. Generally, these effects go away as treatment continues.

As it has been established with other probiotics, in the first few days of taking align, some consumers have reported experiencing some gas and bloating. This may be temporary while your system is adjusting to this probiotic supplement.

As aforementioned, align probiotic does not interact well with antibiotics, you may experience stomach upset while taking antibiotics together with align.

However, in case these effects persist or worsen, do notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
